Serious iconoclastic unrest breaks out in the provinces, churches are plundered and religious images smashed. A group of 300 nobles present a petition listing various demands, including an end to religious persecution. The inquisition is halted. A year later, Philip II dispatches the Spanish Duke of Alva to restore order, although by that time the unrest has already died down.
